Mole Warning Signs — and When You Need a Skin Check

Doctor's gloved hand examines a mole on a young man's face Moles are normal and common. Most adults have up to 40 common moles. However, some moles may actually be something else in disguise: Melanoma, the most invasive skin cancer.

At Dermatology Associates of West Texas, we provide expert mole checks as part of our comprehensive dermatology services in Lubbock and Denver City, Texas. With more than two decades in business, our team of board-certified dermatologists and experienced family nurse practitioners helps patients identify moles that could be dangerous.

Early detection of problematic moles leads to prompt treatment — and it’s why localized melanoma has a higher than 99% survival rate.

Today’s blog covers signs indicating a problem mole and tells you when to reach out for help.

The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Most moles are harmless, but melanoma, the most serious skin cancer, sometimes starts within a mole. The ABCDE system helps distinguish a normal mole from one that may need medical attention.

These are the key warning signs of melanoma:

  • Asymmetry: One half of the mole doesn’t mirror the other
  • Border: The edges look irregular, blurred, or uneven
  • Color: Multiple colors or unusual shades, such as red, blue, or white
  • Diameter: Bigger than 6mm, about the size of a pencil eraser
  • Evolving: Changes in size, shape, color, or texture over time

Another sign to look out for is what the Skin Cancer Foundation calls the “Ugly Duckling Sign.” This means watching for moles that look different than all your others.

When to Get a Mole Checked

A changing mole isn’t the only reason to schedule a skin exam. You should also consider a professional mole check if you experience:

  • Mole itching, bleeding, or scabbing
  • A new mole appearing after age 30
  • A personal or family history of melanoma
  • Multiple irregular moles

We generally recommend yearly skin cancer checks for most patients. Some patients with elevated skin cancer risk factors may need more frequent exams, so our team tailors a plan for you.
