Why Your Shower Water Temperature May Worsen Eczema

At Dermatology Associates of West Texas, led by Dr. Brent Paulger, our experienced team of fellowship-trained and board-certified dermatologists helps patients understand how small changes, including adjusting shower temperature, can calm inflammation and help protect sensitive skin.

How Hot Water Triggers Eczema Flares

Hot water can ruthlessly strip your skin of its natural oils, which provide a protective shield against dryness and irritation. When that barrier breaks down, moisture escapes and irritants enter.

This can lead to eczema flare-ups, complete with uncomfortable redness, itching, and inflammation. Because eczema-prone skin is already sensitive, these effects can happen quickly, sometimes even within minutes of stepping out of the shower.

Heat also increases blood flow to the skin’s surface, which can intensify itching. That “itch-scratch cycle” can worsen inflammation and delay healing. Although the warmth may feel soothing temporarily, it often leaves the skin even drier and more uncomfortable in the long run.

The Ideal Shower Routine for Eczema-Prone Skin

To keep your skin calm and hydrated, try using lukewarm water, ideally between 98°F and 100°F. This temperature range cleans effectively without stripping essential oils. The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends limiting showers to 10 minutes or less and avoiding vigorous scrubbing, which can damage fragile skin.

Choosing mild, fragrance-free soaps or cleansers is important for anyone with eczema. While your skin is still damp, use a quality moisturizer to help lock in moisture. Always pat (never rub) your skin when drying off.

These simple shower routine adjustments can significantly reduce post-shower dryness and help prevent flare-ups.
