Know Your ABCDEs of Melanoma: The Possible Signs of Skin Cancer

Illustration of woman with potential melanoma beside a chart explaining the ABCDE of warning signs Skin cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and melanoma is its most dangerous type. Detecting early signs of skin cancer can help you get effective treatment. The ABCDE rule is a helpful guide to recognizing the possible signs of melanoma. By understanding these criteria, you can better protect your skin and health.

A for Asymmetry

One of the key signs of melanoma is asymmetry. If you draw a line through the middle of a mole and the two halves don’t match, it could be a warning sign. Normal moles are typically symmetrical, so any significant asymmetry should be checked by a healthcare professional.

B for Border

The borders of a melanoma are often irregular, blurred, or jagged. While common moles have smooth, even borders, melanomas may have undefined edges. If you notice a mole with uneven borders, you must examine it.

C for Color

A normal mole is usually a single shade of brown or tan. Melanomas, however, can display a variety of colors, including different shades of brown, black, and even red, white, or blue. If you spot a mole with multiple colors or an unusual color, it’s worth getting it checked out.

D for Diameter

Size can also be an indicator of melanoma. While not all melanomas are large, many are larger than 6 millimeters in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser) when diagnosed. If a mole is growing in size, it’s time to consult with a dermatologist.

E for Evolving

Any change in a mole’s size, shape, color, or elevation, or any new symptoms such as bleeding, itching, or crusting, can be a sign of melanoma. Normal moles usually stay the same over time, so any evolving mole should be evaluated by a doctor.
